Teaching Yoga in the Pandemic - Chapter 5

The Covid-19 health pandemic changed everything — including yoga. I have been a consumer of online yoga courses and classes since 2011. I’ve always enjoyed the ability to learn from a variety of teachers and take class anytime that fits my schedule. As a student, I also love the ability to be anonymous. It suits my personality well.

But it wasn’t until the forced shutdowns that I transitioned to teaching online. Within days of the shutdowns, I had a quick zoom tutorial and we’d transitioned our studio schedule to livestream classes a few times a day. With everyone stuck at home, students eagerly joined the classes.

Capitol Hill Yoga - Chapter 4

Perhaps the chapter that most defines my yoga journey is yoga studio co-owner. I was the co-owner of Capitol Hill Yoga from 2009–2015. This is how most people in our Washington, D.C. neighborhood first came to know me.

I was one of three owners when we opened. We contributed equally to opening costs and each owned a third of the business. We put together a detailed business plan. We had a facilitator help us lay out our commonalities and differences with small business factors such as relationship to money, organization, programming, etc. We collaborated to form the studio’s purpose and vision. We carefully laid out and documented each owner’s responsibilities and salaries.

Anusara Yoga - Chapter 3

Anusara Yoga was founded by John Friend in 1997. John grew up in Ohio and later moved to Texas. It’s been reported that he sparked an interest in yoga as a teenager after finding library books on the subject. Prior to founding Anusara Yoga, he was a well-respected Iyengar Yoga teacher. Anusara Yoga was based around John’s five Universal Principles of Alignment and rooted in a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic goodness. Anusara is often translated as flowing with grace.
